Huw & Cry/Artwork

…Crying tears of Joy of course. Lovely Huw Stephens played ‘Foolstide’ on his 9pm show tonight. This is the iPlayer link, which will be live for a week, and here’s the tracklisting:

We’re very happy to be sitting alongside brilliant folk like Paul White, Memory Tapes, Wetdog and Munch Munch.

Also, in our flurry of excitement earlier, we totally forgot to post who was behind the artwork for ‘Foolstide’:

'Foolstide' full artwork

The original illustration was drawn by Mr Steven Horry the Second – whose sketches we saw recently and loved - and the graphic design is by us, the Golau Glau collective. Look out for more collaborations with Mr Steven Horry the Second in future, as we’re rather fond of the way he interpreted the idea of showing how Father Christmas was used as a weapon in the war between Puritanism and Yuletide festivities.

Thanks to our good friends at Bedtimebunnage (their post about ‘Foolstide’ is here), who are kindly hosting it for us, you can download a tasty zip file containing:

  • ‘Foolstide’ – our Christmas tune, about when the Puritans banned Christmas for 13 years in the 17th century.
  • ‘A Tragic Error’ – the B-side, combining writings about Greek tragedy and The End Of Time (Doctor Who) and more of our favourite 8 bit sounds.
  • A ‘Foolstide’ songsheet – print it out on both sides of one bit of paper and go a-wassailing in your neighbourhood.
  • Full artwork – both MP3s have artwork embedded, and we include the artwork as a JPEG for you to gaze upon also.

The Golau Glau collective is 6 months old today, 2nd December. Thank you so much if you have listened to us, we really appreciate it.

Blue Peter Advent Crown

Where were we…oh, yes, Wendy Roby of Drowned In Sound has written a superb review of ‘Foolstide’ (more info lower down on these very pages and more to come) in her This Week’s Singles round-up:

Drowned In Sound review

“When Welshers Golau Glau wrote to me this week (it means ‘light quickly’ and is pronounced ‘Goll Eye Gly’ – it being an amalgam of “normal Welsh” and “superarchaic odd Welsh” [THEIR WORDS]) , they tole me they had a Christmas song. And I was a-feared it would be something plain dreary about Why Christmas Is Like Really Bad? Not that I had reason to suspect this, for me and my new Welsh internet friends have previously corresbonded over amusement parks – which means they are fun sorts. Anyway as it turns out ‘Foolstide’ is the sort of thing that brings a smile to your face even if you are in Tesco’s of a Thursday evening crap-hounding your way to the cheapest drinkable bottle of Rose known to humanity. Naturally I found it (£3.20, yes), and all the way to the self-service tills I thrilled at a record that – even though it has slightly rubbish beatmatching – sounds like a Christmas madrigal gone two-step – with all the delightful silliness that implies. It’s a homemade wreath of a thing – all wonky holly wound around a coathanger and the red berries are made of plastic. And yet, it really is quite lovely.”
